Chapter 4

Groans and laughter ruled as the four ladies walked back into the hotel that afternoon. “That was fun, Lillian, but I don’t think I can take another step,” Becca groaned as the four of them made their way into the bar.

Like magic, four lemon drop martinis appeared on the table.

They hadn’t even had time to put down their purses as they stared down at the drinks in front of them. “Who ordered these?” Lillian asked the bartender.

He smiled politely. “I was forewarned of your arrival and asked to have these ready when you reached a table. Enjoy, ladies,” he said and backed away from the table.

Lillian sighed and lifted her glass into the air. “To a successful day conquering New Orleans!” she toasted.

The others all did the same, lifting their glasses to clink one another before taking a long sip.

When the glasses were once again resting on the table, Tallia leaned back against the chair. “Lilly, you’re an amazing tour guide, but I’m exhausted. I call for bubble baths and room service for dinner tonight.”

Lillian laughed as the others lifted their glasses into the air as well. “Fine. That will give me some time to talk with Phillip.”

Jane watched the others, sensing undercurrents that she didn’t completely understand. Tallia lifted her phone up and started typing a message to someone. And Becca looked around as if she expected someone to appear. Lillian’s fingers were trembling slightly, which went along with her almost manic need to entertain everyone all day long. Their host had pushed the four of them from one tourist attraction to another, often reciting interesting, but strange information to everyone. It was almost as if she were trying not to think about anything. Or something.

“Are you okay?” Jane asked, laying a hand on Lillian’s arm.

“Of course I’m fine,” she replied breezily, lifting her glass and taking a long sip of her martini.

Becca and Tallia focused on Lillian, their eyes narrowing. “You don’t look fine,” Tallia commented. “Your cheeks are pale.”

Lillian’s pink-tipped fingers touched her cheeks. “I guess I’m just more wiped out from the day than I’d thought,” she offered as an excuse.

“You seemed a bit frantic at moments today,” Becca pointed out and the three of them nodded, Tallia and Jane agreeing with her.

Lillian forced a smile, and shrugged. “I’m stressed about the wedding,” she admitted.

Jane watched her carefully. After several moments, Jane decided that Lillian was lying. She didn’t know why, and maybe her friend was simply lying to herself, but there was definitely something going on. “When we arrived on Saturday, you said that everything was taken care of. And that you weren’t personally supervising anything, your mother and future mother in law had taken over all of the planning.”

Becca leaned forward, looking at Lillian earnestly. “What are you worried about?”

Lillian sighed, bowing her head. With a slight shrug of her slender shoulders, she fiddled with her drink. “I guess I’m just nervous about getting married.”

Jane leaned forward. “But you love Phillip.”

“And he’s such a nice guy,” Becca exclaimed.
